Case Study 1: Multiple Shipments With a Deadline

Problem

A customer needed to ship 18 truckloads by the end of the month in order to avoid extra Tariffs and Duties crossing into the USA and in order to meet a ship voyage deadline at the Washington Port. The problem? The shipments would only become available starting mid month. Also, they reported that only Super-Bs were available at the time.

Option 1

Arrange Quad-axle trucks to haul the shipments directly from their Williams Lake, British Columbia (BC) location to the Washington Port.

Option 2

Use the available Super-Bs to transfer the shipments to a reload facility close to the Canada-USA border, and arrange Quad-axle trucks from there.

Solution

Seeing as there are more Quad-axle trucks closer to the Canada-USA border, we suggested to our customer to have their Super-Bs deliver to our facilities in Langley, BC where we would break the shipments down to load on our Quad-axle trucks. They accepted our offer. We were able to have all shipments reloaded and delivered to the Washington Port three days before month end. Cost effective, and on time.

Case Study 2: Wide Shipment Had to Go

Problem

A customer called in at noontime on Thursday, May 30th, 2013 to report they were having difficulty organizing the movement of a 12’4” wide (over-dimensional) shipment to coastal Washington. No doubt a recent bridge closure on the I-5 in Washington State contributed towards this, enforcing a 8PM-7AM curfew.

Option 1

Ship the non-over dimensional material immediately to satisfy the end customer, follow up on delivering the wide material after the bridge reopened.

Option 2

Use a Double Drop trailer to load the material vertically, needs a pilot pole-car escort.

Option 3

Preload a standard Quad-axle trailer, deliver after the weekend, use various pilot car escorts.

Solution

The customer agreed to preload a standard Quad-axle trailer. We were able to confirm our route with WA-DOT, to line up the multiple pilot cars needed, to establish a preload time for Friday with the shipper and to visually inspect and measure the shipment; all by day’s end. The next few days went by with little problem so that we were able to have the shipment delivered by Tuesday morning. Efficient, professional and on-time.

Case Study 3: Rush Coil Must Deliver ASAP!

Problem

A large steel coil had to move from Portland, OR to Regina, SK. A customer in Portland, OR contacted T&P Trucking on a Wednesday morning in May 2012 with this urgent order, needing it delivered by the following Friday morning. We normally need 1-2 days notice to make this happen, seemingly not enough time to be successful.

Option 1

Ship by rail.

Option 2

Put it in the schedule for a pick up on Friday, delivery for Monday.

Option 3

Reorganize the immediate truck schedule to meet their needs.

Solution

We re-dispatched a truck from a low priority shipment and sent in that truck two hours later. We were able to have the rush shipment delivered by Thursday in the late evening. Safely, on time and on budget!
